چکیده
Dramatic changes have been shown to occur in lake ecosystems exposed to the same intensities of UV-B as those found in eastern Canada today. These changes are caused by UV-B's ability to inhibit photosynthesis in floating plants down to depths of several meters. In other words, the photosynthesis of floating plants (phytoplankton) is reduced by increasing UV-B. The deeper the UV-B penetrates into a lake, the more photosynthesis is reduced. Photosynthesis is the process whereby bluegreen plants use the energy of sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates, thus creating the bottom-most layer of the world's food chains. A meter is 39 inches.

Climate Change: Causes, Effects and the Need for Science Education for Sustainable Development
The world we live in has witnessed some drastic environmental imbalance in recent times. These imbalances have threatened sustainable developmentwhich is the ultimate goal of man-environment relationship. This paper reviews the causes and effects of climate change on man and his environment with a view to using science education to solve the problems posed by climate change. Literature shows th...

In the environmental debate, global problems clearly gained importance. Successful international conventions could reduce the threats posed by acid rain, ozone depletion and hazardous wastes. Next to end-of-pipe solutions (like placing scrubbers), cleaner inputs (like low-sulphur coal), cleaner products or retrofit processes (replacing CFCs by HCFCs and HFCs) were available in due course. Acid ...

Atmospheric pollution is one of the worst threats to modern society. The consequences derived from different forms of atmospheric pollution vary from the local to the global scale, with deep impacts on climate, environment and human health. Several gaseous pollutants, even when present in trace concentrations, play a fundamental role in important processes that occur in atmosphere. Phenomena su...
متن کاملAdapting human lifestyles for the 21st century.
A number of ecological problems (e.g., global warming, ozone depletion, deforestation, acid rain) have been identified, which threaten to reduce the quality of human life in the 21st century. These problems are human produced, resulting primarily from over-population and over-consumption. Alterations in people's awareness, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors may stimulate changes in their politic...
متن کاملCan ozone depletion and global warming interact to produce rapid climate change?
The atmosphere displays modes of variability whose structures exhibit a strong longitudinally symmetric (annular) component that extends from the surface to the stratosphere in middle and high latitudes of both hemispheres. In the past 30 years, these modes have exhibited trends that seem larger than their natural background variability, and may be related to human influences on stratospheric o...
